Urban tech – Body and emotion in urban design

2021. Workshop with students from the Humanistic Technological Bachelor, RUC

20 first year students attended a two-week workshop focused on using biometric sensors for spatial analyses. In groups they chose a theme and location to perform eyetracking (and for some groups also GSR) studies in combination with interviews.

Some examples of the themes are:

  • Where do people find tranquility in the city, and how does their GSR differ in different surroundings?
  • How does familarity with an urban area affect patterns of movement and gaze?
  • What is the effect of signage on gaze patterns in stores?
  • How do movement and gaze patterns differ between sober and intoxicated people moving around in the city?

The purpose of the workshop was to give the students new methodological competences in working with physiological sensors, as well as a general introduction to the field of emotions, and how to get people to talk about their emotions and sensory experiences. Furthermore there was a focus on conducting ethical studies and using the technology critically.
